Heaps of bees are disappearing from bee hives without a trace as to where they have gone! There is fresh honey and larvae but not a single bee or even a dead body. Without bees our lives would be very different. Most people remember bees from buzzing around or stinging people but, bees have a very important job. Bees are great pollinators and pollen fertilises flowers which then produces fruit and plants. Without bees, humans would be limited to a diet, consisting mainly of rice, corn and water.
Scientists are trying to figure out why bee hives are collapsing. They have a theory it could be a parasitic mite called ‘varroa destructor’ Varroa destructor can only reproduce in a honey bee colony. It attaches to the body of the bee and weakens the bee by sucking hemolymph. In this process, viruses such as the deformed wing virus (DWV) spread to bees. Scientists are calling (the bees disappearing) colony collapse disorder.
